The operator can then position the ‘crosshair’ reticle on the actual piece part edge to see how far the part deviates from the mean dimension. To see the actual reading from the Datum –B- the operator may press the ABS/INC button and instantly view the actual measured distance from this Datum. See the illustration below.

This method  makes the measuring process easier, quicker, and less prone to possible error or SIGHT-PIPE® damage. It eliminates having the operator “hunt” visually for the appropriate edge or various dimensions-he simply always moves the joystick control up or down until the readout reads zero, he then finds the edge and he can instantly see how far off the “mean” dimension the edge being measured is or press the ABS/INC to see the ABS dimension. 

At any point (after finding the initial datum) the operator may skip or choose any of the preprogrammed positions by using the “up” and “down” arrows on the readout to highlight them. By then pressing the ”run” button” the readout will indicate “the distance to zero” to reach the mean edge of that pre-programmed position from it’s current position.
